Aha, SuSe 9.3 is out there! Gonna give it a try, since my SuSe 9.2 keeps crashing on my graphic card (ATI Radeon 9200SE). I’ve been trying everything since some months now, and that stupid card doesn’t get to work properly. On my SuSe installation, it gives a blank screen, and on WinXP the 3D acceleration refuses to do a good job. Weird enough everything works fine under Mandrake 10.1 ?
I think it will be best just to buy another card, it seems to many people think ATI is crap anyway? (Don’t shoot me, i don’t know squad about grapic cards)
No, Linux just don’t likes ATI, Linux likes shit like NVidea (I personally find ATI better) So if you buy a now graphical card, you should buy a G-force or something, they will work fine on Suse Linux, I don’t know if Suse 9.3 is better compatible with ATI, but that is all I know ’bout it.. Not much but hey… grtz
Suse has nothing to do with it, it’s the kernel and xfree/xorg.
Well, the problem isn’t isolated at the SuSe install: also @ Windows XP, the card refuses to work with 3D accel, direct 3D. i tried 100′s of drivers, different clean installs, hell i tried everything! And i’m sure it supports 3D.
Only thing is: it’s a Packard Bell PC, so i don’t know in what degree those parts support non-packard bell drivers and such?
Anyway, i get the same screen at SuSe as i get when i update the ATI driver to the most recent Catalyst: blank screen with on top a blue-ish striped band.
I don’t have to mention this really sux, i can forget playing CS, NFS and every other game that isn’t tetris :’(
Does anyone has any idea how i culd fix this. I am googling around like a madman and tried all sort of stuff, no luck
Never buy Packard Bell, replacing parts isn’t an option
Yeah i know
But it was a system worth 2500€ and i only had to pay 900€ for it, so, worth it anyway, if it was only for the processor
I’ve given up on my SuSe install, went Mandrake again. I was hesitating between Fedora and Mandriva, but Mandriva it is now, since i already knew i don’t have any problems running this distro (i know, where’s the challenge: i don’t need a challenge, i need a working distro)
I gave SUSE 9.3 a go and could not get my ATI 9600 Pro going easily (ie. played for a couple of hours). Thought I’de give Mepis a go and it worked first time. It even downloads and installs the drivers for you as part of the OS install. Excellent OS!
But, Im thinking of upgrading to an Althlon 64 MB soon and there’s no 64-bit Mepis. So I might give SUSE 64-bit a try soon…
Cheers, Gordon
In the meantime i installed Mandriva, but now i heared you talking, i’m gonna give Mepis a try too!
Thx
